USFS Wilderness Volunteer

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, over 150,000 visitors make INDIAN PEAKS WILDERNESS AREA the most heavily used wilderness per acre during those months. Two-thirds of those visitors enter from the eastern side, which is smaller, higher and more fragile. A relatively small proportion of this wilderness is suitable for overnight camping. Our research and monitoring has documented considerable impact to the natural environment. Much of that degradation is irreparable without human intervention.

As recreational use of the Indian Peaks continues to increase, we find that visitors are loving it to death! The US Forest Service, charged with management responsibilities, is severely under funded. To fill this void, the Indian Peaks Wilderness Alliance was founded in 1984. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, citizens’ group that has assumed responsibility for contributing to the care and preservation of this special wilderness.

The summer season offers a unique challenge to us. Accomplish something of value and help us protect a fragile place that receives the highest use per acre of any wilderness in the United States. Sign up today to become a USFS Wilderness Volunteer.

Trail Reconstruction & Reclamation

Reconstruction & Reclamation through trail crews who work on several travel zones during the summer to assure ecologically sound passageways.

Past projects conducted by IPWA included a major trail relocation on Pawnee Pass in 1985. Our routine is usually 3 to 6 trail projects each year . Major re-vegetation projects were done at Lake Isabelle and Mitchell Lake.
