Volunteer Documents & Materials

The Volunteer Handbook hard copy is provided to new volunteers at training day (returning volunteers receive updates every few years and can download the latest version). The Patrol Volunteer Agreements and Legal Forms are e-signed annually as part of the online training, and are available to view (along with the latest Volunteer Handbook and additional materials for the public) on the main Resources and Links page.

Uniform or Name Tag Replacement

  • The USFS requires IPWA volunteers to wear the Forest Service uniform during all patrol activities. Along with the privilege of wearing the uniform comes the responsibility to wear it correctly.  IPWA issues a standard uniform consisting of FS approved shirts and an IPWA approved rain jacket. Both of these have USFS and IPWA patches sewn on the sleeves. Do not remove patches or modify IPWA-provided shirts or rain jackets. See the uniform policy on the main Resources and Links page. If you need a replacement uniform shirt or jacket (such as when yours is worn out) please contact us at hikers@indianpeakswilderness.org.

  • Uniform items are only to be worn by currently registered volunteers who are either on a scheduled patrol or volunteering for IPWA in a public-facing activity (e.g. Trailhead Host). If you decide not to volunteer anymore, please let us know and make arrangements to return your uniform shirt and jacket. Volunteers may also opt to skip a season if needed (and can hold onto the uniform).

  • New volunteers are provided with a name tag with their preferred back (pin back or magnetic back), but may swap the back out at no charge or minimal charge at Arrowhead Awards. If you lose your name tag or need a name tag replacement, you can order a new one directly from Arrowhead Awards in Boulder, CO (in 2025, the cost was $7.50 but this may have increased).

    • Address: 2850  Iris  Ave,  Boulder  CO,  80301  (In the  same  building  as  the  Department  of  Motor  Vehicles). Call for hours.

    • Website: www.arrowheadawards.com Phone: (303) 447-9407. Please tell them you with the IPWA and to have them order a new style brass name tag (specify if you'd like the pin back or magnetic back).

Parks Pass Eligibility and Pro Deal Discounts for Volunteers

  • National Parks Pass for Volunteers: Volunteers can earn a FREE one-year entrance pass to all Federal public lands (the America the Beautiful National Parks Pass & Federal Recreation Lands Pass). More information is available here.

  • Pro Deals: IPWA has worked with the Boulder Ranger District (BRD) to offer pro deals on outdoor gear from online stores ExpertVoice (www.expertvoice.com) and Outdoor Prolink (https://www.outdoorprolink.com/). Current (active) IPWA volunteers can access the U.S. Forest Service Volunteers Group to receive up to 70% off MSRP on over 300 top outdoor brands (such as Sierra Designs, Mountain House, Gregory, etc). You must be an active volunteer for the current season and have completed training in order to receive the certificate you'll need to upload to access the deals (must be renewed annually). Please email us if you'd like to set this up or get an updated certificate.

IPWA Training Resources:

All IPWA volunteers are required to complete training on an annual basis. Annual training for returning volunteers usually consists of an online training that needs to be completed prior to the start of the summer patrol season. New volunteers are required to complete the online training AND attend the in-person training day, typically held the first Saturday in June. New volunteers are also required to completed at least two mentored patrols or group field days before going out on their own.

The following resources are available year round for review purposes only (this does not replace the online or in-person training requirements):
